Six written commitments

The PJL Water Promise — a greener lawn on less water, and the numbers to prove it.

Almost every irrigation company says it saves you water. Very few will write down what they actually do to earn that, or show you how they measured it. These are the six things PJL commits to on every property across Newmarket, Aurora, Markham and the GTA — plus a clear list of what we won't promise you.

The six commitments.

Each one is a thing we do on the job, not a sentiment. If we ever don't do one of these on your property, that's a fair thing to hold us to.

Coverage before run time.

On every service visit we check coverage and pressure before we extend a single run time. Dry spot on the lawn? That's a coverage problem until proven otherwise — a blocked nozzle, a sunk head, a bad arc, a pressure issue.

Why it matters: adding minutes to green up one dry patch overwaters the entire rest of the zone. It's the most common way a system quietly doubles its water bill.

Programmed to your actual bylaw.

Your controller gets programmed to the watering bylaw that applies at your address — not a generic schedule — and we re-check it at every spring opening.

Why it matters: municipal bylaws get amended, and a schedule that was compliant two seasons ago may not be now. Re-checking annually is the only way that stays true.

Season-over-season reporting.

At every spring opening on a Hydrawise system, we pull last season's zone-by-zone history and compare it against the season before, so any change we make to run times is driven by what the system actually did.

Why it matters: without the previous season's data, "let's add five minutes" is a guess. With it, it's arithmetic.

Smart control is the default.

Weather-adaptive smart control is standard on every new system we install — not an upsell line on the quote. Your system knows when it rained.

Why it matters: on an otherwise healthy system, cycles that run right after rainfall are the single largest source of avoidable waste. A fixed clock cannot solve that at any run time.

Pressure-regulated heads as standard.

Every new PJL install uses pressure-regulated heads with low-pressure nozzles as standard — the same hardware that lets us back installs with a 3-year parts-and-labour warranty.

Why it matters: an over-pressurized head atomizes water into fine mist that drifts and evaporates instead of reaching the root zone. You pay for that water and the lawn never sees it.

Estimates with the assumptions shown.

Any water-savings number we give you is calculated for your property, with the assumptions written down next to it — zone count, current schedule, local rate, soil and exposure.

Why it matters: a number you can't audit isn't a number, it's marketing. Ours should survive you checking it against your own water bill.
The through-line: a system gets greener and cheaper at the same time only when the water it applies lands evenly. Every commitment above is either about making application even, or about not guessing when we could measure.

The thing almost nobody explains: distribution uniformity.

Distribution uniformity — DU — is how evenly a zone applies water across its whole area. You measure it by setting catch cans out across the zone, running it, and comparing the volume in the driest cans against the average.

It matters more than run time, and here's the mechanism:

Low uniformity

The driest patch sets the schedule for everyone. You keep adding minutes until that patch greens up — and by then the rest of the zone has taken on far more water than it needed. The lawn looks acceptable and the bill looks terrible.

High uniformity

Every part of the zone receives roughly the same depth of water. The run time can drop to what the turf actually needs, because there's no dry corner dragging the schedule upward.

This is why we check coverage first and touch run times last. Correcting spacing, nozzle selection, arc overlap or a pressure problem lets the run time come down while the lawn gets better. Extending run times to compensate for poor uniformity does the opposite of both, slowly.

Practical version: if someone diagnoses your dry spot by adding minutes at the controller without walking the zone while it runs, they've treated the symptom and billed you for the water.

York Region watering bylaws — what we program to.

Most York Region municipalities run an odd/even schedule tied to your house number, with permitted windows in the early morning and the evening. The differences between them are real, and they're the reason a generic schedule isn't good enough.

Watering inside the permitted window isn't only a compliance matter. The early-morning window is also when evaporation and wind loss are lowest, so a bylaw-compliant schedule is usually the efficient one anyway. Midday watering on a hot, breezy day can lose a meaningful share of the water before it reaches the soil.

If your property is on a private well, municipal outdoor watering restrictions generally don't apply to you — but the efficiency argument does, and so does your pump.

How we measure it.

A promise about water use is worth exactly as much as the measurement behind it. Here's what's actually available on your property, in descending order of precision — and we'll tell you which tier you're in rather than implying a level of measurement your hardware can't support.

What we won't promise.

The list below exists because these are the things our industry is loosest about. Naming them is part of the promise.

Outside the Water Promise

  • A guaranteed savings percentage. We won't quote a property-agnostic number. A figure high enough to impress you would only be true on the worst-performing systems, and one low enough to always be true would be meaningless. You get an estimate for your property with its assumptions visible.
  • Rainwater harvesting, cisterns or greywater reuse. PJL doesn't install these. They're legitimate water-efficiency measures and you'll see competitors list them — we're not going to claim a service we don't provide. If that's what you're after, you want a specialist.
  • Backflow certification or testing. Ontario regulates backflow testing and certification, and any service work on the backflow assembly itself requires a certified backflow tester. That isn't us. We refer out.
  • Overriding your municipal bylaw. We program to the bylaw. We can't schedule around it, and we won't set up a system that quietly ignores it.
  • Fixing supply-side pressure. If the pressure arriving at your property is the constraint, that's between you and your municipality or your well system. We'll identify it, design around it where we can, and tell you plainly when we can't.
  • Agronomy. Soil quality, fertilization, thatch and grass species all drive how much water a lawn needs. We're irrigation specialists — where the limiting factor is the soil rather than the sprinklers, more water won't fix it and neither will we.

None of this means we won't help. It means we'd rather tell you where our boundary is now than discover it together on your property later.
